Venous Reflux Test
A specialized standing ultrasound that identifies faulty valves in your leg veins, finding the root cause of varicose veins.
Venous reflux assessment is a dedicated standing duplex ultrasound that maps incompetent superficial and perforating veins — the essential pre-treatment investigation for varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, and pelvic congestion syndrome.
Book This Evaluation
Performed while standing, the venous reflux test precisely maps out faulty valves responsible for varicose veins and leg swelling.
What It Detects
- Great saphenous vein (GSV) reflux at the groin — causing medial thigh and calf varicosities
- Small saphenous vein (SSV) reflux behind the knee — producing posterior calf varicosities
- Perforating vein incompetence connecting deep and superficial systems
- Post-thrombotic changes and residual thrombus in deep veins
How It's Performed
The patient stands while the probe is applied sequentially from groin to ankle. Reflux is provoked by manual calf compression and release, or Valsalva manoeuvre at the saphenofemoral junction. The procedure takes 30–45 minutes, is painless, and requires no radiation or contrast.
What Results Mean
Results guide treatment selection — determining whether endovenous thermal ablation, foam sclerotherapy, or surgery is most appropriate. Findings integrate with the CEAP classification system for staging chronic venous disease severity.
Who Should Get It
- Varicose veins requiring treatment planning
- Leg swelling or chronic venous insufficiency
- Recurrent venous disease after previous treatment
- Pre-treatment vein mapping
