AAA Ultrasound Screening
A fast ultrasound screening to detect silent, dangerous widening in the main artery of your abdomen.
AAA ultrasound is the gold-standard screening test for abdominal aortic aneurysm — a silent, potentially life-threatening arterial dilatation that is highly treatable when detected early. The scan measures the abdominal aorta and flags any abnormal enlargement (≥3.0 cm).
Book This Evaluation
A simple ultrasound scan of the abdomen quickly measures the aorta to detect any silent, dangerous enlargement.
How It's Performed
Patients fast 4–6 hours beforehand to reduce bowel gas interference. Ultrasound gel is applied to the abdomen and a probe images the aorta from the diaphragm to its bifurcation, measuring maximum diameters. The painless, radiation-free scan takes 15–20 minutes.
What Results Mean
- Below 3.0 cm — Normal
- 3.0–3.9 cm — Small AAA (ultrasound every 2–3 years)
- 4.0–4.9 cm — Moderate AAA (yearly ultrasound)
- 5.0–5.4 cm — Large AAA (every 3–6 months)
- 5.5 cm+ — Surgical threshold; CT angiography required
Who Should Get It
- Men over 65 with smoking history (highest risk group)
- Patients with hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, or established atherosclerotic disease
- Family history of aortic aneurysm
- Women over 65 with significant cardiovascular risk factors
- Patients with connective tissue disorders (Marfan, Ehlers-Danlos)
